Week 1 Information

Thanks for all the responses and input so far. The dates and the location are set and are as follows:

Tuesdays, 16th July – 17th September, 6.30-8.00

Music Seminar Room (SWB20), King’s Building, KCL

Getting there – see http://www.kcl.ac.uk/campuslife/campuses/strand/Strand.aspx

Entering from the Strand entrance, simply follow the ground floor corridor straight ahead to the end; from the side (Somerset House) entrance, go through the foyer, take a right, and follow the corridor. If 6.30 is too early for some then we can always push back to 7pm and try to get through it in an hour.

The book is in two parts, about 280 pages long in total, with the first part about twice the length of the second. I’ve split it into ten roughly equal sections and the schedule for the ten weeks should go more or less as follows:

1. Preface and General introduction pp. ix-20

2. Introduction and Theories of Technical Evolution I pp.21-49

3. Theories of Technical Evolution II pp.49-81 (from ‘Ethnic Differences and Technical Differentiation’)

4. Technology and Anthropology I pp.82-105

5. Technology and Anthropology II pp.105-133 (from ‘Equality, Force, Difference’’)

6. Who? What? The Invention of the Human I pp.134-154

7. Who? What? The Invention of the Human II pp.154-179 (from ‘The Double Origin of Technical Differentiation’)

8. Introduction and Prometheus’ Liver pp.183-203

9. Already There pp.204-238

10. The Disengagement of the What pp.239-276

In advance of the first session, you might find it useful to watch this section from Daniel Ross’ film The Ister, in which Stiegler outlines his project in fairly simple terms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymtnUDAOEWc (this is the first part of two).

It has been proposed that we could find some time over the course of the next couple of months to watch the whole film en masse, as it should complement the reading. We can discuss whether or not people would be interested in doing this in the first week so I can make plans as appropriate.

We should be a diverse group, so there will be time for a general hello during the session, and I will of course be heading to the pub after so do please keep me company.

If you haven’t already done so, please also email me to join the group so I can put you on the mailing list and provide the readings if you don’t have access. If you have any questions or suggestions in advance, please feel free to leave a comment below – I will also try to keep the resources page updated with general information relevant to the group, so please help with that too.

See you in a few weeks!
